Anchorage Railroad

Anchorage Railroad

When the town of Anchorage was founded in the mid-1800's, it was a place for wealthy Louisvillians to have summer homes. The business men would work in town and come out by way of the train on the weekends to be with the families. The first trains - from Louisville, to Anchorage and Pewee Valley and back - started regular service in 1849. When the interurban line started in 1901, students seeking a high school education could attend the local boarding schools: Bellewood Female Seminary, Pine Hill Academy and Forest Military Academy (which was located on the current-day Forest School Estates property - hence the name!) In 1911, enough tax base was generated to allow the community to create Anchorage Graded and High School - now our prized Anchorage Public School. The Anchorage trains are an integral part of our town's history and continue to add to its charm today. Bet you didn't know... - Train speed through Anchorage is not to exceed 25mph. -Whistle-blowing (unless there is an actual emergency) is prohibited in the city limits.
